SYSTEMS THINKING: PRACTICE OF A STRATEGIC THINKER IN COLLABORATION WITH CABRERA RESEARCH LAB

Course Overview

The business landscape today, is characterized by change that presents challenges to anyone attempting to lead and manage complex businesses. What was once a stable and predictable environment is today a global arena with new competitors, changing technology and shifting markets and fluctuating monetary conditions. Customers and End Users are more demanding, and their demands are constantly changing. Resources are getting more expensive. While it is important that new ideas and innovations be developed and tested which will be relevant to the end user or customer, it is equally important to optimize all resources available to the company and stay competitive. One of the biggest challenges in the world today is people are not able to communicate effectively what they think due to too many complex variables and unknowns out there. Its truly a world of VUCA i.e. Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity.

To succeed and thrive in today’s increasingly interconnected world, the ability to understand complex systems, think fluidly, and solve complex problems is essential. The Systems Thinking course provides concrete systems thinking tools you can apply to analyze complex situations. Participants will be able to integrate systems thinking concepts, principles, and practices to improve existing processes, operations, and thinking patterns. Based on their ground-breaking empirical research from Cornell University and Cabrera Labs, the trainer will guide participants each step of the way toward a better understanding of how one thinks and how systems work and how one can better understand the complexities of the modern world.

Course benefits

Participants will be able to combine the analytical tools of systems thinking with the creative mindsets of innovative solutions to make sense of complex systems challenges. They will explore mapping tools to identify the right places to focus, surface insights about one’s stakeholders, and develop solutions which are most impactful. They will apply the Distinctions, Systems, Relationship, Perspectives Model to identify core problems and possible ways to solve these problems.

Participants will bring their own challenges in their environment and use the systems thinking tools to solve complex issues. They will work in groups and each group will present they have chosen to work on to the class and trainer for feedback and coaching.

Course outline

The Programme is structured in Learning Units as shown below:

- Understanding the Root Problem which discuss the root crisis, the thinker vs the doer and some wicked problems out there

- Introduction to Systems Thinking which highlights what exactly is Systems Thinking, various Mental models, Complex Adaptive systems and what exactly is inside a Complex Adaptive System

- Understand the various elements of Distinctions, Systems, Relationships and Perspectives (DSRP). The participant gets to use the DSRP technique to map out their own challenges or problems from their organisation and look at it from multiple perspectives which helps in helping to solve the real problem.

- Introduction to Tools for Systems Thinker. The participants are introduced to various tools like Visual and Tactile tools, Cognitive Grammer, Ice Berg model and the Thinking Loop Model. The participant will be introduced to the different kinds of mapping tools so that they can dive deep into their own systems map, analyse it from multiple angles and then define strategies for improvement, disruption and change.
